Fast Food vs. Obesity

Fast Food vs. Obesity – Fast food caused obesity called as fast food obesity, any kind of fast food is junk food. Junk food is still the same whether it’s from McDonalds, Burger King, or even KFC. The rising trend of fast food is quite alarming, since the previous generation rarely ate out and hardly consuming junk food. With more people affording to buy fast food, obesity is becoming an epidemic traveling in the speed of light. People have become entirely dependent on ready meals and frozen foods to the extent that they lack many of the nutrients needed to keep their body healthy.

However, we will tell you about foods you can eat at fast food joints that are believe it or not healthy.

They are definitely no match to a home cooked meal, but provide good alternatives that won’t ruin your diet.

Burgers: You can make a burger a healthy choice by asking the clerk to skip the mayo and cheese. Due to their high fat percentage, skipping them would leave your burger a suitable choice. What you can do is actually ask for mustard, ketchup, or barbeque sauce to keep your sandwich soft for consumption.

Chicken: Eating chicken is not a bad choice if you don’t go for deep fried options, you can always pick grilled chicken off the menu. It will save you a lot of calories and fat; in addition, make sure to do as mentioned above with the burger.

Ask for mayonnaise alternatives.

Cheese: Cheese in itself is one of the best additions to any sandwich, however; many cheeses are actually made from oils. How can you spot them? They’d look unnaturally orange and greasy for normal cheese.

Bacon: Bacon takes some time to cook and what fast food joints do is just warm it up for you. If you’re going to order bacon off the menu, make sure you see with your own eyes that is has been cooked for a reasonable time. If that is not possible, avoid ordering it off the menu and you will save yourself chemotherapy treatments later on.

French Fries: Always make sure you consume the right amount of fries. I know that a burger is nothing without the fries, so order the smallest size on the menu. The rule of thumb is not to eat more than twenty, so if your friend is with you, make sure to share the love.

Salad: You might think that salads at the fast food joint are the healthiest item you could order. However, you must pay attention to the ingredients in the salad; most of fast food joints include cheese and your choice of dressing. 2 teaspoons of Thousand Island dressing can actually amount to as much as 150 calories. So be very wise when picking a salad and ask the clerk for regular lemon/vinegar dressing.

Meatless Burgers: Tofu is one of the hottest choices nowadays. Just because it’s not mean, doesn’t mean you should add back the mayonnaise and cheese! Be careful, even tofu can make you fat if you eat it in excess.

Soda: Instead of ordering a soda, you can always ask for juice or water. It is better for you on the long run, and if you can’t resist drinking coke while eating the burger get a diet soda.

We hope those tips will keep you safe next time you go for fast food. Following this guide will allow you never to pass those friend lunches or gatherings. With these tips you can avoid fast food obesity.

Shcri.com: Research Report of the Fast Food Industry in China, 2009

The fast food market in China can be divided into the western style and Chinese style according to the specific characteristics. At present, the major western style fast food brands are KFC, Mcdonald’s and Dicos. Chinese style fast food mainly concludes Lihua fast food, Kungfu, Malan noodle, Yonghe King and Daniang dumplings etc. KFC has had more than 2 thousand stores in China and Mcdonald’s stores in China are over 1 thousand, but the scale of Chinese style fast food is all very small.

The fast food industry in China started late and only had about 20 years of history. In 1987, KFC opened its first fast food store in Beijing, opening the fast food preclude in China. During the 1980s and 1990s, other western style fast food entered Chinese market in succession with purpose of attracting the consumers to try the new taste food. As a result, marked achievements had been attained than the expected. In recent decades of years, with the speed-up of social life, the fast food industry has keeping growth at the annual rate of 10 to 15percent. In 2008, the general scale of the fast food industry in China had exceeded 30 billion USD. There is huge potential in the fast food industry in China; meanwhile, there are also investment and concept errors.

The incomes per capita are not very high in China and the development of the fast food industry is retrained from the consumption level and consumption power. Besides, the economic development in various regions is serious disparate, the economy developing faster in the coastal areas than the inlands and the central and western areas; faster in the large cities than the medium and small cities. Even though in the same city, the characteristics of the different consumption levels and the unbalanced development are also prominent. In Chinese market, the average price of a fast food varies from 0.5 USD to 3 USD. The fast food industry in China is imperfect in market environment, inadequate in laws and regulations, imperfect in the distribution systems, non-standard in the consumption environment and numerous in the food safety problems. Therefore, the investors should take the policies, places, the consumers’ incomes and cultural elements into consideration when investing the fast food industry in China.

The urbanization is speeding up in China. Large quantities of rural populations flow into the cities, intensifying the consumption power of the original urban populations. Due to the numerous populations and the continuous fast growth of Chinese economy, China has gradually become the largest catering market in the world under the cultural background of hunger breeds discontentment.

All the time, KFC and Mcdonald’s, two largest western style fast food giants, have left Chinese fast food enterprises far behind, but what cannot be ignored is that Chinese style fast food still occupies near 80% market shares. Among Chinese style fast food, according to the incomplete statistics, at least over 60% fast food is the rice. There are numerous Chinese style fast food enterprises, but the single enterprise is weak in strengths. Besides, the financial crisis has also affected the catering market in China, especially cut down the expenditures in the high-end business banquet. As far as the fast food is concerned, the opportunities exceed the crisis. With the extension of the financial crisis, the consumers and operation situation of the catering market all change quietly. According to the market researches in Shanghai and Beijing etc, many enterprises which patronized the medium and high-end restaurants formerly cut down the expenditures on the business banquet and obviously cut down the dinner frequency and dining standards due to the serious reduction in the profits, leading to the influences on the Chinese restaurants in various degree. Many customers of the restaurants turn to the medium and high quality fast food.

Under the circumstances of international financial crisis, the fast food industry in China does not stop the expansion pace.

For example, KFC is planning to open at least 300 stores in China in 2009, and the planned open stores of Mcdonald’s are cut down slightly but still about 150. The giant enterprise of Chinese style fast food, Kungfu Catering Management Co., Ltd and Changzhou Lihua Fast-Food Ltd also speed up the expansion. As far as the fast food industry is concerned, the financial crisis turns down the costs for the labor forces and house rents in China and provides more development space.

Under the circumstances of the financial crisis, many domestic and foreign enterprises take aim at the fast food industry in China, exclusive the possibility of new western style fast food entering China. Taking the Jollibee Foods Corp. for example, it has already entered Chinese market through merging Yonghe King.

Annual 10%-20% Growth in Chinese Fast Food Market

www.cri-report.com – Modern fast food industry in China started relatively late along with the implementation of China’s reform and opening up. In 1987, KFC established China’s first fast food restaurant in Beijing, ushering in China’s fast food market. In the 1980s and 1990s, other Western fast food enterprises began to enter the Chinese market, and acquired favorable achievements. Chinese fast food began to appear soon.

According to characteristics of the Chinese fast food market, fast food is divided into such two major categories as Western and Chinese fast food. Standardization of Western fast food is easy to be realized since in Western fast food, which is generally roasted and fried, a small quantity of major ingredients, minor ingredients and condiments are adopted. The main varieties of Western fast food are hamburger, chicken nuggets, French fries, etc. which are generally accompanied by soft drinks. Standardization of Chinese fast food is difficult to be realized since in Chinese fast food, there are a large variety of major ingredients, minor ingredients and condiments. The cooking methods are multiple, and the varieties including rice, noodles, dumplings, fried dishes, steamed dishes, etc. are accompanied by Chinese soup or soft drinks.

Currently, the major Western fast food brands in Chinese market are KFC, McDonald’s, Burger King, etc.; the major Chinese fast food brands are Kungfu, Yonghe King, Da Niang Dumpling, etc.

In recent ten years, with the quickening pace of social life, China’s fast food industry has maintained annual growth rate of 10%-20%. In 2010, the market scale of China’s fast food industry exceeded CNY 260 billion.

KFC and McDonald’s, the two fast-food giants, are always leaving Chinese fast food enterprises far behind. But it cannot be ignored that it’s still the Chinese fast food that occupies nearly 70% market share of the fast food industry in China. According to incomplete statistics, at least over 60% of Chinese fast food is rice-based. Chinese fast food enterprises are large in number, but the single enterprises are weak in strength. For instance, by the end of 2010, KFC has possessed over 3,000 restaurants in China, while Kungfu, a leading enterprise of Chinese fast food has possessed less than 400 restaurants in China.

Standardization has always been the biggest obstacle to chain development of Chinese fast food industry. Compared with KFC, McDonald’s and other Western fast food, it is fairly difficult for Chinese fast food industry to achieve standardization, especially in taste, weight, and specification, which is also one of the major reasons for the relatively slow chain development of Chinese fast food industry.

China’s fast food market has been heating up. Such world-renowned Western fast food as McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King, and such Chinese restaurant chain enterprises as Kungfu, Yonghe King, Da Niang Dumpling flourish on a large scale. However, the fast-food giants seem to have no intention to slow down the pace of expansion.

At the end of 2010, McDonald’s announced that in the next 3 years, it would increase 1,000 new restaurants in China.

By the end of 2010, Burger King has opened over 30 restaurants in China. In September, 2010, 3G Capital in Brazil purchased Burger King, the second-largest fast food chain stores in the U.S.A. with USD 3.30 billion. The industry insiders believe that this acquisition will promote the Burger King’s pace of expansion in China.

In the field of Chinese restaurant chain, Kungfu possessed nearly 380 regular stores nationwide in 2010, growing into the NO.1 of Chinese fast food industry. Kungfu plans to own 800-1,000 storefronts in the next 5 years. In addition, Yonghe King possesses 200 chain stores in China’s major cities which are planned to be further expanded to 700 restaurants in the next 5 years nationwide.

China’s fast food market enjoys huge market opportunities, in which exists a lot of mistaken ideas in terms of investment and concept.

In China, the development of the fast food industry is constrained by consumption level and consumption capacity. Economic development is uneven throughout China, the coastal cities are more economically developed than inland, central and western regions, and large cities are more economically developed than small and medium-sized cities. Even in a city, incomes of different groups differ largely. A portion of fast food in Chinese market is usually sold at CNY5-CNY30. The fast food industry in China faces such problems as imperfect relevant laws, inadequate distribution systems, food safety, etc. Investors need to consider various angles of policies, site selection, incomes of local consumers, cultural factors, etc. before investing in China’s fast food industry.

China’s pace of urbanization is accelerating, a large number of rural populations are pouring into the cities, and the consumption capacity of original urban population is gradually increasing. Due to a large population and the continuing and rapid development of China’s economy, China will gradually become the world’s largest fast food market.
